Getting Started with MurmurTone

Learn how to set up and use MurmurTone for fast, private voice-to-text transcription.

Quick Start

Get started with MurmurTone in under 5 minutes:

  1. Download and Install

    Download the installer from murmurtone.com/install and run it. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  2. Launch MurmurTone

    Find MurmurTone in your system tray (bottom-right of your taskbar). The icon is a small coloured dot.

  3. Configure Your Hotkey (optional)

    Right-click the tray icon → Settings → General. The hotkey button shows your current combination; click it and press a new key combination to change it. Default: Ctrl+Shift+Space

  4. Start Transcribing

    Press your hotkey once, speak, then pause. MurmurTone stops automatically after a couple of seconds of silence and types the transcribed text into the active window.

First-time setup The first transcription may take 30-60 seconds while the speech model loads into memory. Subsequent transcriptions will be instant.

Basic Usage

Recording and Transcribing

By default MurmurTone uses an "auto-stop" system:

  1. Press your hotkey once to start recording
  2. Speak clearly into your microphone
  3. Pause for a couple of seconds; MurmurTone stops and transcribes automatically
  4. Your text appears in the active application

Prefer to control the stop yourself? Settings → General offers Hold to talk (record while the hotkey is held) and Toggle (press once to start, press again to stop) as alternatives to auto-stop.

Two short sounds mark the recording state (turn them off in Settings → Audio):
